What does a Editorial Assistant do?

An Editorial Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of an editorial team, working across content pipelines to keep production on schedule. They liaise between writers, editors, and other departments, track manuscript or article submissions, proofread and fact-check copy, and handle administrative tasks such as maintaining editorial calendars and correspondence. In publishing, media, or content organisations, they serve as a foundational layer that keeps editorial output accurate, consistent, and on time.

Key responsibilities

  • Proofread and copy-edit articles, manuscripts, or web content for accuracy, grammar, and style
  • Manage and track submissions, pitches, and editorial calendars
  • Coordinate communication between writers, editors, designers, and production teams
  • Conduct research and fact-checking to support editorial accuracy
  • Assist with commissioning by drafting briefs or responding to contributor queries
  • Maintain style guides, filing systems, and content management platforms
