What does a Scriptwriter do?
A Scriptwriter writes the spoken and visual narrative for video, audio, and digital productions, from YouTube videos and social media reels to webtoons, GDS systems, and AI-generated content. Day-to-day work involves researching topics, structuring stories or arguments, writing dialogue and on-screen direction, and revising drafts based on feedback from directors, editors, or clients. Depending on the format, a Scriptwriter may also adapt content for multiple languages, align scripts to a brand voice, or write to precise timing and technical requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Write and revise scripts for video, audio, podcast, or digital formats to brief
- Structure narratives with clear hooks, pacing, and calls to action
- Research topics to ensure accuracy and relevance of content
- Adapt scripts for different audiences, languages, or platforms (e.g. YouTube, social media, GDS)
- Collaborate with directors, video editors, and producers to align script to production needs
- Incorporate feedback from clients or creative leads across multiple draft rounds

Education & background
No fixed degree requirement; a portfolio of produced scripts is typically the primary hiring criteria, though backgrounds in journalism, creative writing, communications, or film are common.
Career path
Can specialise into comedy writing, technical scriptwriting, narrative/long-form content, or move into roles such as Creative Director, Video Producer, or Content Strategist.
