What does a Video Producer do?

A Video Producer oversees the full lifecycle of video content, translating briefs into finished productions for platforms such as social media, websites, e-learning, and marketing campaigns. Day-to-day work spans pre-production planning (scripting, storyboarding, scheduling shoots), hands-on production (directing camera, lighting, and sound), and post-production editing (cutting footage, adding graphics, colour grading, and sound mixing). Many Video Producers also self-shoot and self-edit, particularly in digital and social-first environments, and collaborate closely with creative, marketing, and brand teams to ensure each piece meets platform requirements and audience expectations.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and manage video productions from brief through to final delivery
  • Write scripts, develop storyboards, and create shot lists for each project
  • Direct and operate camera, lighting, and audio equipment on shoots
  • Edit footage using non-linear editing software, adding graphics, colour grades, and music
  • Optimise and format video outputs for specific platforms (social, web, broadcast, e-learning)
