What does a Publicist do?
A Publicist manages the press and media strategy for artists, talent, or entertainment properties. Day-to-day work involves pitching stories to journalists and editors, coordinating interviews and press days, drafting press releases and bios, and building relationships with music, entertainment, and lifestyle media. They work closely with artist management, labels, and internal marketing teams to align press activity with release schedules, tours, and key moments in an artist's career.
Key responsibilities
- Pitch artists and projects to print, digital, broadcast, and online media outlets
- Write and distribute press releases, artist bios, and media statements
- Coordinate and manage interview schedules, press days, and media appearances
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and media contacts
- Monitor press coverage and compile coverage reports for clients and internal stakeholders
- Develop and execute press campaigns around album releases, tours, and announcements
Skills & tools
Education & background
Degree in PR, communications, journalism, or a related field; strong media contacts and campaign experience often weighted equally
Career path
Junior Publicist → Publicist → Senior Publicist → Head of Press / VP of Communications, or independent PR consultancy
