What does a Internal Communications Manager do?
An Internal Communications Manager develops and executes the strategy for communicating with employees across an organisation. Day-to-day, they write and edit content for internal channels such as intranets, newsletters, all-hands emails, and town hall presentations; advise senior leaders on messaging; manage editorial calendars; and work closely with HR, People, and business teams to ensure employees receive timely, consistent, and clear information about company news, strategy, and change programmes.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and own the internal communications strategy and editorial calendar
- Write, edit, and publish content across intranet, email newsletters, Slack/Teams, and digital signage
- Partner with senior leaders and executives to craft messaging for town halls, all-hands meetings, and leadership updates
- Support change management and transformation programmes with structured communications plans
- Measure channel effectiveness through open rates, engagement surveys, and readership analytics
- Advise business units and HR on communications best practice and messaging consistency

Education & background
Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field; portfolio of internal communications work often equally weighted
Career path
Progresses from Communications Coordinator or Specialist to Manager, then Senior Manager or Head of Internal Communications, with specialisations in change communications, employer brand, or broader corporate affairs
