What does a Podcast Producer do?
A Podcast Producer oversees the end-to-end creation of podcast episodes, coordinating guests, scripting or outlining content, managing recording sessions, and editing audio for clarity and quality. They work closely with hosts, editors, and sometimes video teams to ensure each episode meets the show's editorial standards and is delivered on schedule. On shows with special features or series, they may also develop standalone segments, pitch story ideas, and manage post-production workflows from raw recordings through to distribution on podcast platforms.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate episode production schedules and guest bookings
- Script, outline, or brief hosts ahead of recording sessions
- Record, edit, and mix audio using DAW software
- Manage post-production workflow including sound design, music, and mastering
- Publish episodes to podcast hosting platforms and write show notes or metadata
- Collaborate with video teams to produce companion video content where required
- Pitch and develop special feature episodes or series segments

Education & background
No fixed degree requirement; a background in audio production, journalism, or media is common, and a strong portfolio of produced shows is typically expected.
Career path
Can progress from Associate Podcast Producer to Senior Producer or Executive Producer, or specialise into Technical Producer, Narrative/Storytelling Producer, or Video Podcast Producer.
