What does a Localization Translator do?
A Localization Translator converts written content, such as marketing copy, product descriptions, UI strings, social media posts, and editorial articles, from a source language into one or more target languages, while adapting tone, idioms, and cultural references to resonate with the target audience. They work closely with localization managers, editors, and content strategists to maintain brand consistency across markets, use translation management systems and CAT tools to manage glossaries and translation memories, and review localized content for linguistic accuracy and cultural appropriateness before publication.
Key responsibilities
- Translate marketing, editorial, and product content from source to target language(s)
- Adapt tone, idioms, and cultural references for the target market (transcreation)
- Maintain and update glossaries, style guides, and translation memories
- Collaborate with localization managers and editors on project briefs and deadlines
- Review and proofread translated content for linguistic accuracy and brand consistency
- Flag culturally sensitive or ambiguous source content for clarification
Skills & tools
Education & background
Degree in translation, linguistics, modern languages, or a related field; demonstrated fluency and a strong portfolio are often equally weighted
Career path
Can progress to Senior Translator, Localization Editor, Localization Manager, or specialize in transcreation, subtitling, or a specific industry vertical
