What does a Voiceover Artist do?
A Voiceover Artist records spoken audio performances for a range of projects including fictional character dialogue, audiobooks, commercials, e-learning, and AI voice model training datasets. They interpret scripts, adapt their delivery to match tone, character, or brand direction, and record clean, production-ready audio, often from a home studio or professional recording booth. Many specialize by accent, language, or genre (e.g. character acting, neutral narration, regional dialect work), and may be hired for single sessions or multi-hour recording projects.
Key responsibilities
- Record scripted dialogue or narration to client specifications
- Portray fictional characters with distinct vocal performances
- Deliver accent- or language-specific recordings (e.g. US Southern, Welsh English, Australian, Italian, German)
- Record extended sessions for AI voice model training datasets
- Edit and clean up audio recordings before delivery
- Collaborate with directors or clients to adjust pacing, tone, and character interpretation

No formal degree required; most work is portfolio- and audition-based, with training from voice acting coaches or drama programs being common.
