What does a Video Strategist do?
A Video Strategist develops and owns the strategic framework behind a brand's or creator's video content, deciding what gets made, for whom, on which platforms, and why. Day-to-day they research audience behaviour and platform algorithms, define content pillars and formats, brief creative teams, and analyse performance data to continuously refine the video roadmap. They sit at the intersection of creative direction and data-led decision-making, ensuring every video asset serves a defined business or audience objective.
Key responsibilities
- Define video content strategy across platforms (YouTube, social, owned channels)
- Conduct audience and competitor research to identify content opportunities
- Develop content pillars, formats, and publishing cadences
- Brief and collaborate with producers, editors, and creative teams
- Analyse video performance metrics (views, watch time, CTR, retention) and report on KPIs
- Optimise video metadata, thumbnails, and distribution tactics to improve discoverability
- Align video output with broader marketing or brand campaigns
Skills & tools
Education & background
Degree in marketing, communications, media, or film, or equivalent experience demonstrated through a portfolio of video strategy work
Career path
Can progress from Video Producer or Social Media Manager; senior paths include Head of Video, Content Director, or specialist YouTube/Social Video Strategist
