What does a SEO Manager do?
An SEO Manager leads the end-to-end organic search programme for a website or portfolio of sites. Day-to-day they conduct keyword research, run technical audits, brief and review SEO-optimised content, build and manage link acquisition campaigns, and track performance through analytics platforms. They work closely with developers, content writers, and paid media teams to align organic search with broader marketing goals, and regularly report on rankings, traffic, and conversion impact to stakeholders. In more senior or specialised variants of the role, such as Technical SEO Lead, Local SEO Manager, or AEO/AI Audit specialist, the focus shifts toward structured data, local search signals, or optimising for AI-generated search features.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and execute organic search strategy across technical, on-page, and off-page disciplines
- Conduct technical SEO audits and coordinate fixes with engineering or development teams
- Perform keyword research and map intent to site architecture and content plans
- Brief, review, and optimise content for search visibility and topical authority
- Build and manage link acquisition and digital PR outreach programmes
- Monitor and report on rankings, organic traffic, and conversion metrics using analytics tools
- Identify and act on emerging search trends including AI Overviews and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)
- Manage and mentor junior SEO specialists or coordinate cross-functional SEO workstreams
