What does a Post-Production Supervisor do?
A Post-Production Supervisor manages the entire post-production process for film, television, advertising, or digital content projects. They coordinate between editors, colorists, VFX artists, sound designers, and music supervisors to keep workflows moving, track budgets and schedules, and ensure all deliverables meet technical and creative specifications. Day-to-day work involves scheduling edit suites, managing vendor relationships, troubleshooting technical issues, and acting as the central point of communication between the production team and post-production crew.
Key responsibilities
- Build and maintain post-production schedules across editing, colour, VFX, and sound
- Track and manage post-production budgets, flagging variances to producers
- Coordinate handoffs between editorial, VFX, audio, and finishing departments
- Manage relationships with post-production facilities, freelancers, and vendors
- Oversee technical delivery requirements and quality-control checks for broadcasters or platforms
- Ensure all assets, media, and paperwork (music cue sheets, E&O) are filed and delivered correctly

Background in film/media production or a related field; many enter through hands-on editorial or production coordinator experience rather than a specific degree
Career path
Typically progresses from Post-Production Coordinator or Assistant Editor; can advance to Head of Post-Production, Executive Producer, or move into specialist roles such as Delivery Producer or VFX Producer
