What does a Packaging Designer do?
A Packaging Designer develops the visual and structural design of product packaging, working across the full lifecycle from initial concept through to print-ready production files. They translate brand guidelines and marketing briefs into packaging that functions on shelf, communicates product benefits clearly, and meets manufacturing and regulatory requirements. Day-to-day work involves creating dielines, selecting materials and finishes, collaborating with printers and production teams, and iterating on prototypes to ensure the final pack is both commercially effective and technically viable.
Key responsibilities
- Develop packaging concepts from brief through to final artwork and print-ready files
- Create and adapt structural dielines for boxes, pouches, labels, and other pack formats
- Apply brand identity and typography to packaging surfaces with accuracy and consistency
- Collaborate with printers, manufacturers, and production teams to ensure technical feasibility
- Prepare and manage physical or digital prototypes and mock-ups for client or stakeholder review
- Ensure packaging meets legal, regulatory, and sustainability requirements for relevant markets

Education & background
Degree or HND in Graphic Design, Packaging Design, or Product Design; portfolio of packaging work is typically the primary hiring criterion
Career path
Mid-weight to Senior Packaging Designer, then Lead or Head of Packaging, or specialisation into structural design, FMCG brand design, or creative direction
