Communications Manager job description

Position Overview
The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington seeks a creative, curious, and strategic storyteller to help shape how Federation communicates its mission, impact, and priorities.


Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Manager translates organizational priorities and communications strategy into compelling stories and messaging that inform, inspire, and strengthen relationships with donors, volunteers, partners, and the broader Jewish community.


Working closely with colleagues throughout Federation, this role identifies meaningful stories, interviews stakeholders, develops content, and maintains an editorial calendar that supports organizational priorities. The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and editor who enjoys uncovering authentic stories, translating complex ideas into accessible language, and producing high-quality content that reflects Federation's voice and values.


Key Responsibilities


Lead Content Development
•Develop written content across campaigns, publications, digital channels, stewardship, fundraising, executive communications, and organizational initiatives
•Interview staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners to identify and develop compelling stories
•Translate organizational priorities into clear, engaging, audience-centered messaging
•Produce speeches, articles, impact stories, web content, email copy, reports, and other written communications\


Drive Editorial Excellence
•Manage the editorial calendar in partnership with Communications leadership
•Maintain editorial standards for voice, tone, accuracy, and consistency
•Identify proactive storytelling opportunities that advance organizational priorities
•Maintain and expand Federation's story library
Collaborate Across Federation
•Partner with Communications, Development, Foundation, Impact, and program teams to develop content that supports organizational goals
•Collaborate with Design, Marketing, and Public Relations to ensure content is effectively delivered across channels
•Support executive communications and organizational messaging as needed

•Federation consistently tells compelling stories that strengthen relationships and demonstrate impact
•Content is proactive, strategic, and aligned with organizational priorities
•Editorial quality is consistently high across channels
•Colleagues view Communications as a trusted storytelling partner


Qualifications

  • 2–4 years of experience in communications, project coordination, event support, or a related field
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Teams, SharePoint, and project management tools such as ClickUp
  • Sound judgment, adaptability, and a solutions-oriented approach in fast-paced or changing environments
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to anticipate needs and manage multiple competing priorities
  • Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the Greater Washington (DC, MD, and Northern VA) region. This is a hybrid position, with 3 days a week required in our headquarters
