What does a 3D Designer do?
A 3D Designer builds and renders three-dimensional models, environments, characters, or product visuals used across advertising, digital media, film, gaming, and brand campaigns. Day-to-day work involves modelling objects or scenes from briefs or reference materials, applying textures and lighting, and producing final renders or animations for use in print, video, web, or interactive formats. They collaborate closely with art directors, motion designers, and marketing teams to ensure 3D assets align with creative direction and technical specifications.
Key responsibilities
- Build and refine 3D models, environments, and product visualisations from creative briefs
- Apply textures, materials, shading, and lighting to achieve realistic or stylised renders
- Produce still renders and animated sequences for marketing, advertising, or digital content
- Optimise 3D assets for different output formats (print, web, video, real-time)
- Collaborate with art directors and motion designers to align visuals with brand guidelines
- Iterate on designs based on feedback and prepare final files for production
Skills & tools
Education & background
Degree or diploma in 3D design, visual communication, animation, or a related field, though a strong portfolio often carries equal or greater weight
Career path
Can specialise into motion design, VFX, product visualisation, or architectural visualisation, or progress to Senior 3D Designer, 3D Art Director, or Creative Director
