What does a Moderator do?

A Moderator oversees online communities, forums, social media groups, or live streams to ensure conversations remain respectful, on-topic, and aligned with platform guidelines. Day-to-day work involves reviewing user-generated content, removing or escalating policy-violating posts, responding to community reports, welcoming new members, and engaging with participants to maintain a healthy community culture. Moderators often collaborate with community managers and trust-and-safety teams to refine rules and handle edge cases.

Key responsibilities

  • Review and action user-generated content against community guidelines
  • Remove, hide, or escalate posts and comments that violate platform rules
  • Respond to member reports and resolve disputes fairly and consistently

  • Identify and ban spam accounts or bad actors
  • Document moderation decisions and flag recurring issues to community managers
