What does a Community Lead do?
A Community Lead owns the strategy and day-to-day management of a brand or product's community, whether online forums, social groups, events, or ambassador programs. They identify, recruit, and nurture engaged members, create programming and content that keeps the community active, and act as the primary voice between the organization and its audience. They track community health metrics, surface member feedback to internal teams, and develop initiatives that convert casual users into loyal advocates.
Key responsibilities
- Define and execute the community strategy across platforms (forums, Slack, Discord, social groups, events)
- Recruit, onboard, and retain community members and power users or ambassadors
- Plan and run community events, AMAs, webinars, or meetups (virtual and in-person)
- Moderate community spaces and enforce community guidelines
- Gather and synthesize member feedback to inform product, marketing, and content teams
- Track and report on community health metrics such as engagement rate, growth, and retention
Skills & tools
Education & background
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or a related field, though portfolio and demonstrated community-building experience are often weighted equally
Career path
Can progress to Head of Community, Director of Community and Engagement, or pivot into Growth Marketing, Developer Relations, or Product Marketing
