Job Description
The Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) is a versatile, bilingual journalist responsible for developing and delivering compelling, accurate, and community-focused journalism across Telemundo Colorado’s broadcast, streaming, digital, and social platforms.
The MMJ owns the storytelling process from pitch to publication — identifying original stories, developing sources, researching and conducting interviews, shooting and editing video, writing and producing stories, reporting live from the field, and adapting journalism for multiple platforms.
The role requires strong editorial judgment, initiative, excellent Spanish-language storytelling skills, a digital-first mindset, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the newsroom.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting & Enterprise Journalism
- Own the full storytelling process: pitch, research, report, write, shoot, edit, produce, publish, and present original stories.
- Report daily General Assignment, breaking news, and enterprise stories across broadcast, streaming, digital, and social platforms.
- Consistently develop and pitch original, relevant story ideas and maintain a strong pipeline of daily, enterprise, and follow-up reporting.
- Build and maintain a diverse network of trusted sources that can lead to original and exclusive journalism.
- Use public records, documents, data, research, and source development to verify information, uncover stories, and provide deeper context and accountability.
- Conduct interviews fluently in Spanish and English and accurately translate information while preserving meaning and context.
- Produce compelling, accurate, fair, and unbiased journalism using strong writing, characters, visuals, natural sound, data, and context.
- Follow stories beyond the initial report and identify opportunities to advance coverage through meaningful follow-up and accountability journalism.
Breaking News & Field Execution
- Respond with urgency to breaking and developing news and adjust reporting priorities as coverage needs evolve.
- Deliver accurate and compelling live reports, packages, updates, and unscripted coverage under tight deadlines.
- Independently shoot, edit, and execute live shots using station-approved cameras, lighting, audio, editing, and transmission equipment.
- Gather, verify, and communicate information quickly during developing situations, clearly distinguishing confirmed facts from developing information.
- Ad-lib confidently and effectively during breaking news and other unscripted live situations.
- Maintain assigned field equipment and troubleshoot routine technical issues when necessary.
Multiplatform Journalism
- Create and adapt journalism for broadcast, streaming, web, mobile, social media, and emerging platforms based on the needs of each platform and audience.
- Produce digital-first and social-first content, including short-form video, explainers, reporter updates, digital stories, headlines, and streaming content.
- Advance stories throughout the day with timely updates across platforms as new information develops.
- Use social media professionally for newsgathering, source development, audience engagement, and distribution of Telemundo Colorado journalism.
- Identify opportunities to extend the reach, relevance, and impact of original reporting across platforms.
Newsroom & Community
- Participate actively in editorial meetings by contributing original ideas, sources, angles, follow-ups, and coverage strategies.
- Communicate proactively with producers, the assignment desk, digital teams, and newsroom leadership throughout the reporting process.
- Manage multiple assignments and deadlines while maintaining accuracy, editorial standards, and strong execution.
- Develop a strong understanding of Colorado and build authentic relationships with the diverse communities Telemundo Colorado serves.
- Represent Telemundo Colorado professionally at community events, station initiatives, public appearances, and other assignments.
- Contribute to special projects, investigations, major-event coverage, and other newsroom initiatives as assigned.
- Follow NBCUniversal and Telemundo News Standards and Guidelines, Social Media Policies and Standards, and all applicable newsroom policies.
- Work a flexible schedule based on news coverage needs, including early mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, and breaking-news situations.
