Freelance Infrastructure Finance Reporter (APAC Focus) job description
As a freelance infrastructure finance reporter based in Sydney, you will produce high-quality, exclusive journalism on infrastructure investment activity across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
The role will focus on producing on-and-off record market intelligence focused on greenfield project finance, new project developments, public-private partnerships (PPP’s), infrastructure fund strategies, as well as break news on M&A and debt transactions — always ahead of public announcements. You will deliver both real-time reporting and deeper analysis for institutional investors, lenders, developers, and advisory firms.
Core sector coverage includes:
- Power generation (thermal, renewables, storage) and transmission
- Energy transition and decarbonisation projects
- Transport infrastructure (roads, rail, airports, ports)
- Logistics and supply chain assets
- Digital infrastructure (data centres, fibre, telecom towers)
- Water and social infrastructure
Key Responsibilities
- Produce a consistent pipeline of exclusive articles and analysis on infrastructure finance transactions and investment trends in Australia and APAC
- Break news on project finance deals, M&A processes, debt/equity fundraising, and secondary market activity
- Build and maintain a strong regional network of sources including:
- Project developers and sponsors
- Infrastructure and pension funds
- Banks and private credit investors
- Government stakeholders and policymakers
- Legal and financial advisors
- Interview senior decision-makers, including C-suite executives, fund managers and originators
- Attend key industry conferences, investor days and market events across Australia and Asia-Pacific
- Deliver timely, accurate reporting under deadline pressure
- Provide forward-looking insight on policy shifts, regulatory developments and market dynamics
- Collaborate with editors, analysts and other contributors where relevant
Other Features
- Flexible freelance role with autonomy over content generation and workflow
- Strong exposure to one of the world’s most active infrastructure investment markets (Australia)
- Opportunity to build a high-value niche in energy transition, PPPs, and institutional capital flows
- Ability to shape editorial focus based on sector expertise and contacts
Required Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
- Proven experience in financial journalism, ideally covering infrastructure finance, energy or project finance markets
- Strong track record of breaking exclusive stories and developing proprietary angles
- Established network of sources across Australian and/or APAC infrastructure markets
- Solid understanding of:
- Project finance and PPP structures
- Debt and equity capital markets
- Australian infrastructure policy and regulatory environment
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Highly self-motivated, proactive and persistent in sourcing stories
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Willingness to travel across Australia and APAC for key industry events
Remuneration
- This is a freelance position, with compensation structured on a per published article basis, with rates agreed in advance depending on the nature, exclusivity and complexity of the content
- Pre-approved expenses incurred in the course of reporting — including travel to conferences, industry events, and interviews — will be reimbursed in line with agreed guidelines
- Additional opportunities may be available for longer-form features, special reports, or commissioned analysis, subject to editorial requirements
- Success candidates will be expected to sign a Confidential Non-Compete Agreement prior to commencement of work
