What does a eLearning Content Developer do?
An eLearning Content Developer designs, writes, and produces digital learning materials for online or blended training programmes. They work closely with subject-matter experts (SMEs) to translate complex information into structured, learner-centred content, then build that content using authoring tools and learning management systems (LMS). Day-to-day work spans writing scripts and storyboards, creating interactive modules, recording or editing audio and video, and running quality-assurance checks to ensure content is accurate, accessible, and aligned with defined learning objectives.
Key responsibilities
- Collaborate with SMEs to gather, analyse, and structure source content
- Write scripts, storyboards, and instructional copy for online modules
- Build interactive eLearning modules using authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline or Rise
- Develop supporting assets including graphics, screencasts, and short-form video
- Upload, configure, and test courses within an LMS (e.g. Moodle, Cornerstone, TalentLMS)
- Apply accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG) and ensure SCORM/xAPI compliance
- Gather learner feedback and iterate on content to improve completion and assessment outcomes
Skills & tools
Education & background
Bachelor's degree in instructional design, education, communications, or a related field; portfolio of built modules often weighted equally to formal qualifications.
Career path
Can progress to Senior eLearning Developer, Instructional Designer, Learning Experience Designer, or L&D Manager; some specialise in video production, gamification, or LMS administration.
