SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Manager, Marketing & Channel Strategy, the Marketing & Content Strategy Advisor is responsible for translating City-wide marketing strategy and enterprise priorities into actionable, integrated campaigns. This role ensures that brand, content, creative, media, and channel initiatives are credible, inclusive, data-informed, and aligned with both user needs and organizational goals, and are executed cohesively across all platforms.
The Advisor plays a critical role in shaping experiences, working closely with Senior Communications Advisors to ensure that strategic campaigns and operational communications are aligned, messaging is consistent, brand-compliant, and supports both organizational priorities and service delivery.
Acting as the strategic bridge between enterprise marketing priorities and the Communications team, the Advisor also supervises the day-to-day operations of the supporting marketing team, providing guidance, coaching, and performance oversight to ensure campaigns are delivered consistently, on time, and to a high standard of quality.
GENERAL DUTIES
Marketing Strategy & Campaign Leadership
- Lead the development of enterprise marketing strategies that elevate major campaigns, corporate initiatives, and organizational priorities.
- Translate corporate objectives into audience-led, insight-driven marketing approaches rooted in research, data, and behavioural understanding.
- Drive marketing content strategy by transforming Communications’ message direction into creative narratives, formats, and channel plans that define how and where messages are delivered.
- Ensure marketing efforts are integrated across paid, owned, and earned channels.
- Provide strategic advisory to Communications Teams on content plans, campaign messaging, and audience engagement techniques.
Team Supervision & Operational Management
- Provide day-to-day guidance, coaching, and performance management for the marketing team, including goal setting, workload planning, and professional development.
- Monitor campaign execution to ensure timely delivery, quality standards, and brand consistency.
- Serve as the operational link between strategic direction and campaign execution.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Provide strategic recommendations on channel mix, targeting, content formats, and engagement strategies.
- Oversee campaign measurement and reporting, using insights to inform ongoing improvements.
- Identify opportunities to optimize workflows, processes, and resources across the marketing team.
- Ensure adherence to corporate, accessibility, and brand standards in all initiatives.
- Reviews analytics, dashboards, and performance reports.
- Ensures insights are translated into strategic recommendations.
- Guides optimization decisions across creative, content, and channels.
- Work in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
- Hours of work to primarily be during the day, with an expectation of evening and weekends where required
- Perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the responsibilities of this position.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous related work experience normally acquired through the completion of a university degree in Marketing, Digital Marketing, Business Administration, Communications or a combination of equivalent education and related work experience.
- Progressive work experience/knowledge in the areas of marketing research, marketing strategy, communication planning, communication technology and managing external vendors/consultants.
- Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and developing multi-disciplinary teams in fast-paced, high-visibility environments.
- Ability to translate enterprise priorities into actionable objectives and measurable performance outcomes.
- Skilled at aligning operational communications with strategic marketing initiatives and implementing new processes or workflow improvements.
- Expertise in brand management, messaging frameworks, and ensuring consistent brand voice across multiple platforms.
- Proven experience leading integrated, multi-channel campaigns from concept to evaluation, including applying brand strategy recommendations.
- Knowledge of campaign intake processes, decision-rights frameworks, and project prioritization.
- Knowledge of Google Analytics, ROI tracking, keyword research, on-page optimization, social media strategy, and marketing automation tools.
- Familiarity with AI-powered content generation and other emerging marketing technologies.
- Strong analytical skills, including performance measurement, dashboard development, and data-informed decision-making.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to work effectively with staff, management, senior leadership, external stakeholders, and the public.
- Experienced in providing advice on marketing strategy, brand, and communications risk at a senior level.
- Ability to balance strategic objectives with operational realities, adapt to evolving priorities, and navigate politically sensitive or high-visibility initiatives.
- Demonstrated understanding of inclusive communications, plain language, accessibility standards, and culturally competent, equitable campaign delivery.
- Display a high degree of judgment, discretion, and confidentiality in handling sensitive projects and communications.
- Experience in municipal, government, or regulated environments is an asset, especially where accessibility, brand compliance, and stakeholder management are critical.
