What does a Photo Director do?

A Photo Director shapes and owns the photographic vision of a brand, publication, or agency. They develop visual concepts, brief and commission photographers, oversee shoot production from pre-production through post, and curate final image selections to ensure every photograph aligns with the brand's aesthetic and editorial standards. Day-to-day work spans collaborating with creative directors, art directors, stylists, and editors, managing photographer rosters and budgets, reviewing retouching, and maintaining a consistent photographic language across print, digital, and social platforms.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the photographic vision and style guidelines for the brand or publication
  • Commission and brief photographers, negotiating fees and usage rights
  • Lead pre-production planning including casting, location scouting, and prop and styling direction
  • Oversee on-set shoot production to ensure creative and technical standards are met
  • Curate and edit image selects for use across print, digital, and social channels
  • Manage photography budgets, schedules, and vendor relationships
  • Review and approve retouching and post-production work
